Science: Mathematics Major, A.S.

Purpose

The curriculum is designed for individuals who plan to transfer to a four-year college or university to complete a baccalaureate degree. This curriculum is designed to prepare students to major in one of the following fields: mathematics, mathematics education, statistics, operations research, applied mathematics, or computer science.

Transfer Information

Students are advised to work closely with the faculty and counseling staff for program and course scheduling. Electives should be chosen carefully to meet requirements of the transfer institution. The responsibility for proper course selection rests with the student.

Recommended Preparation

Satisfactory completion of the following high school units or equivalent as a minimum: 4 units of English, 4 units of college preparatory mathematics, 1 unit of laboratory science, and 1 unit of social science.

Electives should be chosen with the advice of an academic advisor to meet the requirements of the intended transfer institution.

At least 20 of these credits must be  in MTH courses to support transfer to a four-year institution with a science major.

As students may begin the program with different levels of academic preparation, If precalculus is needed, begin with MTH 167 PreCalculus with Trigonometry (or MTH 161 PreCalculus I and MTH 162 PreCalculus II).

Students who place out of Precalculus should choose from the General Education Electives or Math Electives options listed below.

Credit will not be awarded for both MTH 261 Applied Calculus I and MTH 263 Calculus I, or for both MTH 262 Applied Calculus II and MTH 264 Calculus II.

This elective is not needed if selections for all other requirements total 60 credits or more.

Students must choose courses from two of the following three areas: Fine Arts, Humanities, and Literature. Credit will not be awarded for taking two courses from the same area.

CSC 208 Introduction to Discrete Structures may substitute for MTH 288 Discrete Mathematics with a course substitution request, if required by the transfer institution. Credit cannot be awarded for both MTH 288 Discrete Mathematics and CSC 208 Introduction to Discrete Structures.

MTH 245 Statistics I and/or MTH 246 Statistics II require a course substitution, and the courses should be chosen based on the requirements of the intended transfer institution.
