American Sign Language to English Interpretation, A.A.S.

Purpose

Designed for students who have limited, if any, previous experience with interpreting for Deaf people, this degree program provides the comprehensive training in theory and practical interpreting skills necessary for employment as an educational or community interpreter. Successful completion of this program prepares the student to pursue either a Virginia Quality Assurance Screening Level, national certification through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, or a level on the Educational Interpreter’s Performance Assessment. These credentials qualify the student to interpret in either educational or community settings.

Admission Requirements

The prerequisite for admission to the program is fluency in both English and American Sign Language. This is demonstrated by placement into ENG 111 College Composition I and completion of the ASL Career Studies Certificate with a grade of “C” or better.

Two Years

Electives should be chosen with the advice of an academic advisor to meet the requirements of the intended transfer institution.

May choose MTH 154 Quantitative Reasoning, MTH 155 Statistical Reasoning, or higher or the science elective may be selected from biology, chemistry, physics, geology, or natural science courses with a lab component, listed under General Education Electives.
