ADJ 159 - Physical Security (3 CR.)


Studies the various forms of perimeter barriers which impact upon security operations; examines insurance considerations, underwriters licensing certification, fire prevention and fire code regulations, and the general health and safety requirements for all employees and contact persons within the organization. Lecture 3 hours per week.

General Course Purpose
The purpose of this course is to provide the student with the knowledge of physical security basics and applications as well as possible solutions to the problems of physical security.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  • Identify hazards impacting the safety and security of individuals and assets.
  • Develop plans for appropriate protection of assets utilizing physical security applications.
  • Identify potential risks and assess appropriate measures to limit risks.

 

Major Topics to be Included

  • Analyze facility security planning. 
  • Review elements of access control.
  • Review barrier systems.
  • Evaluate alarm systems.
  • Review physical security concepts. 
  • Protective measures such as, doors, locks, keys, vaults, windows, lighting, and hardware.
  • Security surveys and threat assessments.
  • Examine emergency planning and homeland security issues.
  • Review fire codes and regulations.    
  • OSHA standards.
  • Insurance standards.
