ADJ 110 - Introduction to Law Enforcement (3 CR.)


Studies the philosophy and history of law enforcement, presenting an overview of the crime problem and policy response issues. Surveys the jurisdictions of local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. Examines the qualification requirements and career opportunities in the law enforcement profession. Lecture 3 hours per week.

General Course Purpose
The purpose of this course is to provide the student with an understanding and overview of various law enforcement operations and issues impacting today’s environment. The student will have a greater understand for the requirements and responsibilities of law enforcement officers in American society.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  • Understand the responsibilities law enforcement officers.
  • Explore the different jurisdictions of law enforcement agencies.
  • Describe the challenges and critical issues facing law enforcement officers and agencies. 
  • Analyze the role of discretion in law enforcement.
  • Describe the police subculture and the impact on law enforcement.

  • Explore the history of law enforcement.
  • Discuss career opportunities in the field of policing. 
  • Explore ethics and professionalism in law enforcement.
  • Explain use of force and the standards in law enforcement.
  • Define and discuss problem-oriented policing.
  • Explain the role of community policing in today’s environment.
  • Examine civil liability in law enforcement.
  • Discuss the need for public support of law enforcement.
  • Review lethal and non-lethal or less lethal force. 
  • Examine the concept of police subculture.
  • Review critical issues in law enforcement.
