Interior Design (IDS)

Introduces drafting and presentation, color theory, and coordination, space planning, and arrangement of furnishings. Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 3 hours. Total 5 hours per week.

Introduces tools and equipment, lettering, methods of construction, designing, and dELIneation of architecture. Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 3 hours. Total 5 hours per week.

Provides instruction in graphic presentation of three dimensionally drawn interiors. Presents the use of colored media to render three dimensional drawings. Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 3 hours. Total 5 hours per week.

Prerequisite is ART 101. Teaches history of furnishings and interiors from the ancient world to the present. Lecture 3 hours per week.

Introduces quality kitchen and bath design elements in accordance with recognized industry standards. Presents basic components of kitchen and bath design, including assessment of existing conditions and construction systems, measurement, product selection, specification, and communication of the design. Teaches coordination of kitchen and bath design with existing structural, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and ventilation systems. 3 lecture hours. 3 hours per week.

Presents textiles, floor and wall coverings, and window treatments. Emphasizes construction, fiber, finish, and code applications. May use research and field trips to trade sources representing these elements. Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 3 hours. Total 5 hours per week.

Provides instruction in lighting terminology including sources of light, lamp types, fixture types and controls. Explore lighting design using layering techniques and lighting calculations that are used to determine lighting needs for a variety of spaces. Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 3 hours. Teaches graphic standards and specifications in interior design. Explains best practices of accessibility and code compliance for commercial applications. Focuses on program analysis and effective space planning. Laboratory 3 hours. Total 5 hours per week.

Prerequisite and Corequisite IDS 215. Problems in designing and developing presentations with emphasis on retail spaces. Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 4 hours. Total 6 hours per week.

Introduces the preparation of documents related to the business of design including contracts, purchase orders, and specifications. Covers business formats, legal issues, and ethics related to interior design as well as interviewing techniques and a discussion of portfolio requirements. Lecture 3 hours per week.

Involves research, authentication, and provenance of historic objects. Covers examples of furnishings, fixtures, textiles, glass, and ceramics. May provide field trips, lectures, examination, and discussion to assist in determining age, condition, and other properties. Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 4 hours per week.

Instructs in the use of computer aided drawing software for drafting of floor plans, elevations, perspectives, and other drawings used to convey design ideas. Lecture 1 hour. Laboratory 4 hours. Total 5 hours per week.

Introduces advanced methods of designing project spaces using BIM (Building Information Modeling) software. Includes the development of rendered three dimensional drawings with specialized light settings, entourage, and photo-realistic images. Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 3 hours. Total 5 hours per week.

Introduces interior design solutions that support the environment and can be utilized in new and existing structures. Includes the principles of Green Design and steps in producing design solutions using natural and toxin free materials. Covers material sources, interior finishes, furnishings and lighting and their applications. Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 3 hours. Total 5 hours per week.

Prerequisite and Corequisite IDS 215. Introduces the proper elements of a professional resume for employment in the field. Focuses on the organization of portfolio content and introduces various methods of digital portfolio production as well as traditional formats. Includes detailed instruction on proper oral presentation skills, interview preparation and techniques, and professional attire and behavior. Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 2 hours.
